[Personal Spending Rises 0.5% in April, Energy Spending Surges by $28.8 Billion, Services Lead the Rise at $67.2 Billion] ⑴ US personal spending rose 0.5% month-over-month in April, an increase of $111.1 billion, a slowdown from the revised 1% increase in March, and in line with market expectations. ⑵ Goods spending increased by $44 billion, mainly driven by soaring energy prices due to the Middle East conflict, with gasoline and other energy goods spending surging by $28.8 billion. Food and beverage spending was $9.5 billion, other non-durable goods $8.2 billion, leisure goods and vehicles $8.1 billion, while automobile spending decreased by $9.2 billion. ⑶ Services spending climbed to $67.2 billion, with housing and utilities at $22.7 billion, leisure services at $12.1 billion, food and lodging at $11.3 billion, and final spending by non-profit organizations at $9.9 billion being the four main drivers.
