[FAO: Over 100 Million People in Europe and Central Asia Experience Food Shortages] Guchu, Assistant Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and Regional Representative for Europe and Central Asia, stated in Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan, on the 12th that over 100 million people in Europe and Central Asia have experienced food shortages in recent years. Speaking at an international conference hosted by Tajikistan, Guchu said that ensuring food security remains a serious challenge. In recent years, over 100 million people in Europe and Central Asia have experienced moderate to severe food shortages. Approximately 90 million hectares of land in the region have been affected by degradation, weakening agricultural productivity and ecosystem functions, jeopardizing the region's long-term sustainable development. Guchu stated that since 2015, Europe and Central Asia have invested approximately US$21.4 billion in food and agricultural system development, but this investment is still insufficient. The FAO assessment indicates that approximately US$650 billion in additional funding is needed globally each year to promote the transformation of the international food and agricultural system.
