CFTC Commitment of Traders Report: Precious metals and crude oil bulls retreat, US Treasury shorts hit a new high.

Data from the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) shows that in the week ending July 7, COMEX gold speculators reduced their net long positions by 1,964 contracts to 114,854 contracts. COMEX silver speculators reduced their net long positions by 616 contracts to 12,131 contracts. COMEX copper speculators reduced their net long positions by 970 contracts to 60,397 contracts.

As of the week ending July 7, crude oil speculators reduced their net long positions in WTI crude oil by 19,507 contracts to 65,681 contracts. Natural gas speculators in the four major markets—NYMEX and ICE—reduced their net long positions by 1,597 contracts to 7,366 contracts.

As of the week ending July 7, net short positions in the Japanese yen were 123,778 contracts. Net short positions in the euro were 16,227 contracts. Net short positions in the British pound were 87,903 contracts. Net short positions in the Swiss franc were 37,414 contracts.

As of the week ending July 7, speculators increased their net short positions in CBOT U.S. Treasury futures by 52,811 contracts to 143,591 contracts. Speculators increased their net short positions in CBOT 5-year U.S. Treasury futures by 38,606 contracts to 1,359,116 contracts. Speculators increased their net short positions in CBOT ultra-long-term Treasury futures by 21,150 contracts to 307,819 contracts.

Speculators increased their net short positions in CBOT U.S. 10-year Treasury futures by 5,371 contracts to 814,262 contracts. They also decreased their net short positions in CBOT U.S. 2-year Treasury futures by 26,573 contracts to 1,261,008 contracts.

As of the week ending July 7, CBOT wheat speculators' net short positions decreased by 7,734 contracts to 69,603 contracts; CBOT corn speculators' net short positions decreased by 38,007 contracts to 67,411 contracts; and CBOT soybean speculators increased their net long positions by 9,684 contracts, turning into net long positions, adding 45,451 contracts.

As of the week ending July 7, cotton speculators' net long positions increased by 13,880 contracts to 68,392 contracts; ICE cocoa speculators' net short positions decreased by 2,419 contracts to 22,378 contracts; ICE sugar speculators' net short positions decreased by 34,618 contracts to 63,952 contracts; and iced coffee speculators' net long positions increased by 2,075 contracts to 10,223 contracts.
