[HSBC Economist: AI Creates Huge Surplus for US Consumers, Potentially Reaching $250 Billion by 2027] (1) Economists are gaining a deeper understanding of the impact of artificial intelligence on the consumer sector. HSBC Global Economist James Pomeroy points out that AI tools for personal use are generating considerable consumer surplus due to their free nature, saving users time and money. (2) Data shows that by early 2026, the US consumer surplus generated by AI had reached approximately $172 billion, a significant increase from approximately $116 billion six months earlier. (3) It is projected that by 2027, this surplus will rise to $250 billion, equivalent to 0.8% of US GDP or 1.5% of US consumer spending. Pomeroy emphasizes that this scale is not to be ignored.
