[The Netherlands may be entering a state of "actual water shortage", and water resource allocation faces a critical choice] (1) Van Wafren, chairman of the Dutch National Water Resources Allocation Coordination Committee, said that due to the ongoing drought, declining river levels and increased water demand, the country is considering raising the current "water shortage threat" level 1 alert to the "actual water shortage" level 2 alert. (2) The current drought is close to the extreme situation in 1976, with rainfall less than once every 20 years; high temperatures are driving up water demand, and the flow of the Rhine and Meuse rivers is decreasing not only in the Netherlands, but also in Germany, Switzerland, Belgium and France. (3) Once it moves to level 2, the water authorities will have to make a formal decision on the allocation plan for limited water resources.
