The Saudi-led coalition announced on the night of July 13th local time that its air defense system had successfully intercepted and neutralized a ballistic missile fired by the Houthi rebels in Yemen towards southern Saudi Arabia. Earlier that day, Sana'a International Airport, the Yemeni capital effectively controlled by the Houthis, was attacked. The Houthis accused Saudi Arabia of carrying out the airstrike and vowed retaliation. The Yemeni Ministry of Defense disclosed that the airstrike on Sana'a International Airport was aimed at preventing a high-level Houthi delegation, who had just attended a memorial service for the late Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, from returning to Yemen on an Iranian aircraft. Since the Houthi takeover of Sana'a in 2014, Yemen has been mired in conflict and instability.
