[Houthi Rebels Break Four-Year Ceasefire, Launch Missile Retaliation Against Saudi Arabia] 1. On July 13, the Houthi rebels in Yemen launched missiles and drones at Saudi Arabia, targeting Abha International Airport in southwestern Saudi Arabia. This marks the first time the Houthis have claimed responsibility for an attack on Saudi Arabia since the informal ceasefire in March 2022. 2. The immediate trigger for this attack was the Houthis' accusation that Saudi Arabia had launched an airstrike earlier that day on Sana'a International Airport, the Yemeni capital. Houthi spokesman Yahya Sarreya stated that the Saudi attack on Sana'a airport "ended the de-escalation and ceasefire phase" and vowed that it "would not go unpunished." The Houthi-controlled Ministry of Foreign Affairs even considered the airstrike a "declaration of war." 3. However, accounts of who was responsible for the attack on Sana'a airport differ. The Ministry of Defense of the internationally recognized Yemeni government (backed by Saudi Arabia) stated that its armed forces struck the runway at Sana'a airport to prevent an Iranian aircraft from landing. 4. A spokesperson for the Saudi-led military coalition stated that its air defense forces intercepted ballistic missiles launched by Houthi rebels towards southern Saudi Arabia. There are currently no reports of casualties or property damage.
