[New Zealand Reserve Bank Chief Economist: Inflation Decline May Be Slower Than Expected, Further Interest Rate Hikes Not Ruled Out] (1) Paul Conway, chief economist of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, said that the decline in domestic inflation may be slower than the central bank previously predicted, so the possibility of further interest rate hikes in the future cannot be ruled out. (2) Last week, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand lowered its third-quarter inflation forecast from 4.3% to 3.3%, mainly due to the decline in fuel prices brought about by the temporary US-Iran agreement; however, the Middle East war has recently reignited, and international oil prices have rebounded. (3) Conway pointed out that changes in the Middle East situation have brought upside risks to the September quarter inflation forecast. If the resulting inflationary pressure lasts longer than expected, the central bank will introduce corresponding control measures.
