[Rubio to chair the first meeting of the Economic Diplomacy Action Group to coordinate U.S. economic governance strategy] (1) U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is scheduled to chair the first meeting of the Economic Diplomacy Action Group (EDAG) this Wednesday. The group was established during the Biden administration (signed by a presidential memorandum in June 2024), but has never formally met before; its members include the heads of more than ten federal agencies, including the State Department, Department of Commerce, Department of Energy, Department of Agriculture, Department of Defense, Department of Treasury, Trade Representative, and Export-Import Bank. (2) The EDAG aims to coordinate and integrate various economic diplomacy tools and capacity-building mechanisms of the U.S. government to advance U.S. foreign policy priorities, especially “U.S. leadership in artificial intelligence,” while strengthening national competitiveness by supporting U.S. businesses, creating jobs for workers, and attracting domestic investment. (3) Rubio participated in legislation as early as 2019 (the “Supporting American Business through Diplomacy Act”), laying the foundation for the group’s framework; the Secretary of State was formally appointed as chair during the Biden administration. Since Trump's return to the White House, Rubio has also served as acting national security advisor, acting administrator of the Agency for International Development (AID), and acting national archivist (the last of which he no longer holds). This time, he chaired the EDAG meeting, which is the latest extension of his many concurrent responsibilities.
