[New York Governor Josh Hozul Announces Suspension of Data Center Environmental Permits for Up to One Year] (1) New York Governor Josh Hozul announced a suspension of state-level data center environmental permit issuance for up to one year to allow the state government to develop a regulatory framework to protect the environment, the power grid, and residents' electricity bills. (2) This suspension applies to data centers with a power consumption of 50 megawatts or more. In contrast, the one-year suspension bill previously passed by the state legislature (which has not yet been signed or vetoed) covers "hyperscale" facilities with peak loads exceeding 20 megawatts; Hozul chose to proceed through administrative action first, as the administrative path is faster. (3) During the suspension period, the state government will develop a regulatory framework involving the environmental impact and water quality and quantity impacts of data centers, while also promoting data centers to pay into the power grid fund and establishing an investment fund to help local governments negotiate relevant agreements.
