[US Trade Representative: Mexico is pragmatically advancing USMCA negotiations, while Canada has not yet made concessions] (1) US Trade Representative Greer said that formal negotiations with Mexico on the USMCA are progressing smoothly, with Mexico taking a pragmatic approach, but the US trade deficit with Mexico remains a challenge; the two sides are scheduled to hold the third round of negotiations in Mexico City next week. In contrast, the US and Canada have not yet started formal negotiations, only maintaining weekly communication. Greer said that he has made suggestions to Canada to improve trade relations, but Canada has not yet made the concessions that Trump expects. (2) Greer pointed out that Trump authorized him to control the trade deficit through tariffs, quotas and other means, while trying not to disrupt the supply chain, and hoped to incentivize the supply chain to move to the United States; his failure to automatically extend the USMCA on July 1 marked the beginning of the countdown to the agreement, and if the three countries cannot reach an agreement on improvements, the agreement will terminate in ten years. (3) Regarding Canada, Greer said that a breakthrough can only be achieved if Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Carney reach a direct consensus. He declined to predict the duration of the negotiations, but emphasized that the current US-Canada trade relationship has not yet entered a "better state".
