[UK Economy Grows Steadily but at a Slower Pace; May GDP Supported Only by Services] (1) Liz McKeown, head of economic statistics at the UK Office for National Statistics, said the UK economy maintained steady growth in the three months to May, but the pace slowed slightly due to relatively weak economic performance in the last two months. (2) The services sector was the main driver of growth over the past three months, with computer programming, advertising and pharmaceuticals performing particularly well; however, continued weakness in electricity production and a contraction in architectural design and engineering services partially offset the growth. (3) Although all three sectors grew in the three months, the slight increase in GDP in May was driven solely by the services sector, while manufacturing and construction both declined.
