[Iraqi Trucks Detour Through Syria, Hormuz Closure Spurs New Land Export Routes] ⑴ Faced with financial pressure from the obstruction of the Strait of Hormuz, Iraq is building a large-scale truck convoy to transport fuel oil via Syria to Mediterranean ports, rapidly transforming Syria into a crucial fuel export hub in the Middle East. ⑵ In just a few months, Syria's fuel exports have surged from almost zero to accounting for more than a quarter of the Middle East's total exports. A convoy of thousands of trucks traverses the land route, reaching Syrian Mediterranean ports in approximately four days, effectively bypassing the blockade of the maritime chokepoint. ⑶ In addition to the Syrian route, Iraq also transports trucks loaded with fuel oil via Jordan. Some traders report that small quantities of crude oil are also transported by truck in the same way, indicating that Iraq is expanding its export routes through multiple channels. ⑷ From a market perspective, although land-based alternatives are more expensive than sea transport, they have become an important supplementary means of maintaining export revenue in the extreme scenario of prolonged obstruction of the Strait. Going forward, attention should be paid to the capacity limits of land routes, the stability of transit policies in transit countries, and whether this model can be adopted by other struggling oil-producing countries on a larger scale.
