Amazon's self-driving car company, Zoox, recently recalled 105 driverless taxis to fix a software vulnerability that prevented the vehicles from detecting dense smoke and driving directly into smoky areas. Zoox notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) of the recall on July 8, stating that the company only became aware of the smoke detection flaw after an incident last month. Reportedly, an empty Zoox driverless taxi drove directly into a smoke-filled fire scene in Las Vegas while a rescue operation was underway. This recall comes after the NHTSA urged developers in the autonomous driving industry to prioritize addressing safety issues related to emergency responders.
