CFTC Positioning: Gold net long positions hit an 11-month high, crude oil net long positions hit a three-week low, and US Treasury short positions saw significant covering.

Data from the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) shows that in the week ending August 25, speculators increased their net long positions in COMEX gold by 5,383 contracts to 151,315 contracts, a new high in 11 months. 图片点击可在新窗口打开查看 As of the week ending August 25, COMEX silver speculators increased their net long positions by 2,467 contracts to 13,235 contracts. COMEX copper speculators decreased their net long positions by 2,780 contracts to 76,446 contracts. As of the week ending August 25, speculators' net long positions in Brent and WTI crude oil fell to 333,914 contracts, a three-week low; while their net long positions in NYMEX WTI crude oil increased by 538 contracts to 104,573 contracts, a four-week high. As of the week ending August 25, speculators' net long positions in NYMEX gasoline reached 79,858 contracts, a five-month high; net long positions in NYMEX diesel increased to 17,342 contracts, a 20-week high; net short positions in NYMEX natural gas decreased to 46,024 contracts, a seven-week low; and speculators' net short positions in NYMEX natural gas across the four major markets (NYMEX, ICE, and ICE) reduced their net short positions by 27,238 contracts to 39,598 contracts. As of the week ending August 25, net short positions in the Japanese yen were 63,298 contracts. Net short positions in the euro were 36,352 contracts. Net short positions in the British pound were 44,524 contracts. Net short positions in the Swiss franc were 19,946 contracts. As of the week ending August 25, speculators reduced their net short positions in 5-year U.S. Treasury futures on the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) by 15,044 contracts to 1,259,061 contracts; reduced their net short positions in 10-year U.S. Treasury futures on the CBOT by 107,986 contracts to 838,975 contracts; and reduced their net short positions in 2-year U.S. Treasury futures on the CBOT by 66,041 contracts to 861,296 contracts. As of the same week, equity fund managers reduced their net long positions in the S&P 500 index on the CME Group by 5,608 contracts to 946,814 contracts; and increased their net short positions in the S&P 500 index on the CME Group by 35,462 contracts to 302,971 contracts. As of the week ending August 25, CBOT wheat speculators' net short positions decreased by 5,727 contracts to 41,603 contracts; CBOT corn speculators' net long positions increased by 117,711 contracts to 196,270 contracts; and CBOT soybean speculators' net long positions increased by 23,565 contracts to 110,054 contracts.
