[Germany's ZEW Economic Sentiment Index Rises to 34.7 in September, Missing Expectations] ⑴ Germany's ZEW economic sentiment index rose slightly to 34.7 in September from August, the highest since February, but below market expectations of 37. ⑵ This reading indicates a cautiously optimistic market outlook on the recovery of Europe's largest economy, with fiscal stimulus and export-promoting measures expected to continue to provide support. However, significant risks remain, with high energy costs related to the conflict with Iran and uncertainty stemming from hybrid attacks continuing to weigh on the outlook. ⑶ At the sector level, the insurance sector benefited from higher interest rates, with the sentiment index rising 12.1 points to 46.4. The banking sector also saw significant improvement, with the index rising 8.2 points from August to 52.9. ⑷ The steel and metals production sector and the automotive sector remained in negative territory, but assessments of the current situation improved significantly, jumping 14 points to -47.1, the highest since June 2023.
