[Canadian Wholesale Trade, Slightly Rebounded in July] ⑴ Canadian wholesale trade rose 0.3% month-over-month in July, compared to a 2.8% increase in June, while the market had expected a 0.5% decline. ⑵ The growth was mainly driven by building materials and supplies, and the food, beverage, and tobacco sub-sectors. ⑶ Three of the seven sub-sectors saw growth, accounting for 49.7% of wholesale trade; sales increased in six of the ten provinces. ⑷ In terms of volume, wholesale sales declined 0.6% in July. ⑸ Wholesale inventories remained flat month-over-month, compared to a 1.4% increase in June; year-over-year, wholesale trade grew 7.9%, while inventories increased 5.5%. ⑹ Among the sub-sectors, building materials and supplies increased 3.5% month-over-month and 14.3% year-over-year, food, beverage, and tobacco increased 1.7% month-over-month, and motor vehicles and parts increased 1.7% month-over-month. ⑺ Agricultural products declined 1.9% month-over-month, personal and household goods declined 1.5%, machinery and equipment declined 0.6%, and miscellaneous items declined 2.9%. (8) Excluding automobiles, wholesale trade remained flat month-on-month but increased by 9.1% year-on-year.
