[JPMorgan Survey Shows: US Treasury Clients Surge into Short Positions] A JPMorgan survey of US Treasury market investors shows that clients surged into short positions at the fastest pace since 2019 in the past week. As of the week ending September 14, the proportion of clients holding short positions rose 10 percentage points to 19%, the largest weekly increase since records began in 2019. Neutral positions fell from 56% to 48%, the lowest level since November 2023. Long positions fell from 35% to 33%. This shift brought the net long position size of participants to its lowest level since May 18. The accumulation of short positions follows the release of the August Consumer Price Index (CPI) data on September 11—which showed core prices rose 0.3% month-over-month, higher than expected. This inflation data strengthened the case for a Federal Reserve rate hike on September 16.
