[Bessant: Treasury's Treasury Buyback Operation a Success] U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessant said Tuesday that the Treasury's recent buyback operation of long-term U.S. Treasury securities was successful, noting strong demand in two auctions following the intervention. Although Bessant had described the buybacks as a means of injecting liquidity and curbing rising bond yields—which are pushing up the government's debt repayment costs—Treasury yields still rose after the Treasury conducted its largest buyback operation last week. "We can imagine what would have happened if we hadn't taken these measures, and we've subsequently had two of the most successful Treasury auctions in 20 years," Bessant said at a congressional hearing. "Since President Trump took office, [the U.S. bond market] has been the best-performing bond market among developed countries."
