In the foreign exchange market on July 15, the US dollar index, which measures the strength of the US dollar against six major currencies, rose, gaining 0.23% throughout the day and closing at 99.616 in the New York session. By the close of trading in New York that day, the exchange rates of major currencies against the US dollar were as follows: the euro was quoted at 1.1543 US dollars, down from 1.1557 US dollars in the previous trading day; the pound sterling was quoted at 1.3481 US dollars, also lower than 1.3511 US dollars in the previous trading day. Conversely, looking at the performance of the US dollar against other currencies: the US dollar was quoted at 155.09 yen to the Japanese yen, higher than the previous trading day's 154.05 yen; the US dollar was quoted at 0.8185 Swiss francs to the Swiss franc, up from the previous trading day's 0.8163 Swiss francs; the US dollar was quoted at 1.3917 Canadian dollars to the Canadian dollar, up from the previous trading day's 1.3902 Canadian dollars; and the US dollar was quoted at 9.7773 Swedish krona to the Swedish krona, also rising from the previous trading day's 9.7412 Swedish krona. This rise in the US dollar index reflects a short-term increase in market demand for the US dollar, putting pressure on non-US dollar currencies. It is also closely related to the current global foreign exchange market's reaction to economic data and monetary policy expectations from various countries.
