[UK Inflation Rises to 3.1% in August, a Five-Month High] ⑴ In August 2026, the UK's annual inflation rate rose to 3.1%, the highest in five months, in line with market expectations, compared to 2.9% in July. ⑵ Transport costs made the largest contribution to the upward movement of the annual inflation rate, rising from 3.6% in July to 4.6%, mainly driven by motor fuel. Petrol prices rose 9.1 pence/liter to 161.3 pence month-on-month, and diesel prices rose 14.2 pence to 181.8 pence, pushing motor fuel inflation from 15.5% to 23.0%. ⑶ Housing and household services inflation rose from 4.6% to 4.9%, communications from 5.0% to 5.3%, and leisure and culture from 1.4% to 1.6%. ⑷ Food inflation remained unchanged at 1.3%. Core CPI inflation remained at 2.6%, goods inflation rose from 2.2% to 2.7%, and services inflation remained unchanged at 3.4%. (5) On a month-on-month basis, consumer prices rose 0.5% in August, the largest increase in four months, in line with expectations, compared with a 0.3% increase in July.
