[Japan Posts Trade Deficit for Fourth Consecutive Month] Preliminary statistics released by Japan's Ministry of Finance on the 16th showed that Japan's trade deficit reached 1.11 trillion yen (approximately 155 yen to 1 US dollar) in August, marking the fourth consecutive month of trade deficit, affected by rising costs of imported goods such as crude oil. Data shows that Japan's imports in August totaled 11.15 trillion yen, a 28.0% increase year-on-year. Crude oil imports surged 58.7% year-on-year due to a rebound in import volume and persistently high import prices. Imports of crude oil from the United States reached 400.4 billion yen, approximately 11 times that of the same period last year. Japan's crude oil imports in August totaled 11.594 million kiloliters, a 3.6% increase year-on-year. Imports of crude oil from the Middle East decreased by 30.9% year-on-year to 7.25 million kiloliters, marking the fifth consecutive month of decline compared to the same period last year; imports of crude oil from the United States reached 3.65 million kiloliters, approximately seven times that of the same period last year, marking the fifth consecutive month of increase compared to the same period last year. In addition, driven by increased exports of electronic components such as semiconductors, automobiles, and semiconductor manufacturing equipment, Japan's exports rose 19.3% year-on-year to 10.05 trillion yen in August.
