[Spain's High Fuel Prices Lead Oil Companies to Extend Fuel Discounts] ⑴ Faced with soaring fuel prices, major Spanish energy companies are taking steps to alleviate consumer pressure. BP has decided to extend its nationwide fuel discount promotion until the last weekend of September. ⑵ The discount was originally scheduled to run until August 30, but the continued rise in fuel prices prompted the company to first extend it to September 13, and now it has been extended to September 27. ⑶ The oil company is offering discounts of up to approximately €0.15 per liter on the weekends leading up to September 27, from 8:00 AM on Friday to midnight on Sunday. ⑷ The discount varies depending on the type of fuel, with approximately €0.10 per liter for regular fuel and approximately €0.15 per liter for Ultimate fuel. ⑸ Customers simply need to refuel at participating BP gas stations and identify themselves via a mobile app at checkout to enjoy the discount. The savings will accumulate in myBP account and can be used for future refueling. ⑹ BP stated that these measures reinforce its commitment to providing tangible benefits to customers, enhance the value of the myBP loyalty program, and help drivers optimize fuel costs during peak travel periods nationwide. (7) Unstable conditions in the Middle East have driven up oil prices, prompting major companies in the industry to strengthen strategies to reduce customer costs and cultivate loyalty. Repsol will continue its aggressive discount policy until September 30, while Moeve has decided to extend its savings program until the end of November. (8) Data from the Spanish National Statistics Institute shows that diesel prices rose by about 30% and gasoline prices by about 17% in August. These increases will directly impact consumers' wallets in October unless the government decides to extend existing discounts. (9) Since July, fuel subsidies have focused on hydrocarbon taxes, which were about 15 cents per liter in July, about 10 cents in August, and about 5 cents in September. Discounts will cease from October onwards. (10) The decree that came into effect in July reinstated the 21% VAT on fuel and established a decreasing discount, which can be increased to about 20 cents per liter under certain conditions. Diesel prices rose by more than 15% in July, triggering this condition, and the subsidy increased to about 20 cents per liter in September. 11 The problem is that the law did not foresee a new extension of the discount based on the August price record. The focus in the future will be on whether the government will introduce follow-up assistance and the transmission of oil price trends to the consumer side.
