[World Meteorological Organization: Global Water Reserves Fall 42% Below Normal Levels] (1) A recent report from the United Nations World Meteorological Organization shows that an analysis of global water resources indicates that global water reserves fell below normal levels last year, by 42%. (2) The report states that the World Meteorological Organization's analysis of the global water cycle shows that global water reserves are being depleted. Last year, the Earth's freshwater reserves (the total amount of water stored in groundwater, rivers, lakes, snow, ice, soil, and vegetation), including surface water and groundwater, were 42% below normal levels. (3) The report points out that, from the perspective of global river flow, 2025 will be one of the driest years in 35 years, with water levels in about two-thirds of river basins below normal levels. (4) According to the report, 2025 will be the fourth consecutive year that glaciers in all regions of the world have melted. Glacier melting not only causes short-term disasters such as floods but also brings long-term problems related to water reserves. (5) The report points out that the number of floods and droughts worldwide has reached record highs over the past five years, with Asia and Africa accounting for at least half of all water-related extreme events globally and more than 80% of deaths. The World Meteorological Organization calls for an address to the problem of water scarcity.
