[Death Toll in Suspected Methanol Poisoning Incident in Ondo State, Nigeria Rises to 48] The Ondo State government in Nigeria announced on the 17th that the death toll from suspected methanol poisoning following the consumption of locally brewed alcoholic beverages has risen to 48. The Ondo State government stated that in early September, residents of two communities in the state sought medical attention after drinking locally brewed alcoholic beverages, with at least 20 deaths reported by the 10th. The incident has since spread, and as of now, local medical institutions have reported more than 182 related cases, including 48 deaths. Local sources said that a local brewer sold the alcoholic beverages to local residents, mostly young people. Local government stated that urine samples from the victims show a possible link to methanol poisoning. So far, police have arrested 15 people suspected of producing and selling the alcoholic beverages.
