After being hit, the tanker caught fire and ceased navigation. ⑶ The commander stated that the IRGC continues to exercise strong control over the strait and warned that "illegal passage through the Strait of Hormuz" will only result in the destruction of vessels that disobey regulations. ⑷ This incident comes as Iran and the US military continue to dispute the status of the Strait of Hormuz and the safety of passage. ⑸ The US Central Command has repeatedly denied that the IRGC has control over the strait, while the IRGC claims that vessels using routes not approved by Iran could become targets or trigger landmines.
