[Johor Palm Oil Factory Ordered to Cease Operations Due to Pump Malfunction Leading to Wastewater Overflow] ⑴ A palm oil factory in Kluang, Malaysia, has been identified as a source of pollution in Sungai Sembrong, Johor, and has been ordered to immediately cease operations. ⑵ The Kluang Department of Environment launched an investigation and inspection after first detecting pollution in the river on Monday, subsequently issuing the order. ⑶ The investigation found that a pump malfunction in the factory's wastewater treatment pond caused oily wastewater to overflow into Sungai Sembrong. ⑷ The factory has been ordered to immediately cease production and carry out cleanup and repair work; follow-up actions, including the revocation of its license, are also underway. ⑸ Previously, dead fish and shrimp were found in parts of the Sungai Sembrong river, and the pollution was reportedly affecting the livelihoods of nearby indigenous villagers. ⑹ The Department of Environment reminded all industries, especially palm oil factories, to strictly comply with the Environmental Quality Act 1974 and licensing conditions, and warned that severe action, including suspension or revocation of licenses, will be taken against violations that cause environmental pollution or threaten drinking water supplies and public health.
