[Official from the Ministry of Commerce's Department of Consumption Promotion Discusses my country's Consumer Market Situation from January to August 2026] From January to August, total retail sales of consumer goods and services increased by 2.5% year-on-year, indicating a stable and improving consumer market with a continuously optimizing consumption structure. First, commodity consumption grew steadily. From January to August, total retail sales of consumer goods increased by 1.1%, and retail sales of consumer goods excluding automobiles increased by 2.7%. Second, demand for services was strong. Currently, residents' consumption demands are becoming increasingly diverse, and the consumption structure continues to optimize, shifting from being primarily commodity-based to a balance between commodity and service consumption. From January to August, service retail sales increased by 4.9%, 3.9 percentage points faster than commodity retail sales. Third, rural consumption potential was unleashed. The vitality of the county-level consumer market continued to be released, and the urban-rural consumption structure continued to optimize. (Ministry of Commerce)
