[Alternative Gains for the AfD in Two German State Elections] On September 20th, parliamentary elections were held in Berlin, the capital of Germany, and in the eastern state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. According to German sources, in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) is expected to engage in a fierce contest with the Social Democratic Party (SPD). Meanwhile, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), led by Chancellor Merz, has only about 6% support in the state. On September 6th, the state parliamentary elections were held in Saxony-Anhalt, in which the AfD won by a large margin with 43.8% of the vote, becoming the largest party in the state; the CDU received only 17.2% of the vote.
