On September 20, Germany held two local elections simultaneously: the city council election in Berlin and the state parliament election in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (Megrenburg-Western Po). According to the latest exit polls, the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) is projected to receive 37% of the vote in the Mecklenburg-Western Po state election; the center-left Social Democratic Party (SPD) within the ruling coalition is projected to receive 35.5%; and the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), led by Chancellor Merz, is projected to receive only 5.5%, just barely qualifying for the state parliament – its worst performance in any state election since 1949. Given that other major parties have explicitly refused to cooperate with the AfD, its chances of governing Mecklenburg-Western Po are extremely low. However, this marks the second time in two weeks that the far-right AfD has become the largest party in a German state parliament. In the Berlin city council elections, the CDU is projected to receive 20% of the vote; the SPD 12%; and the Alternative for Germany (AfD) 16%, with its number of seats expected to increase. The Left Party is projected to receive 24.5% of the vote, currently in the lead. Germany has 16 federal states, and Berlin is one of the three city-states. In the eastern Saxony-Anhalt state elections held on the 6th of this month, Merz's CDU also suffered a major setback, with its vote share plummeting to around 17%; the AfD, on the other hand, won approximately 44% of the vote, becoming the largest party in the state parliament.
