[ECB: Soaring Natural Gas Prices May Push Up Eurozone Inflation Faster] ⑴ The European Central Bank (ECB) stated in its economic report on Monday that soaring natural gas prices could push up eurozone inflation faster than ever before, but its impact on electricity prices will be relatively small due to the increased share of renewable energy generation. ⑵ Affected by the global supply tightening caused by the conflict in Iran, European wholesale natural gas prices have surged by more than 140% compared to the same period last year; at the same time, low inventory levels in Europe also increase the risk of further increases in natural gas prices. ⑶ A survey of eurozone central banks shows that in more than half of the eurozone countries, changes in wholesale natural gas prices will be transmitted to natural gas inflation within one to three months, a faster pace than in 2022.
