[Tanker Capacity Tight, Strait Shipping Costs Soar] ⑴ Globally, not only is crude oil supply tight, but tanker capacity is also strained. ⑵ Earlier this month, charter rates for supertankers loading and transiting the Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf exceeded $1 million per day. ⑶ This translates to approximately $26 per barrel, roughly a quarter of the value of crude oil. ⑷ Combined with previous attacks on tankers in the Strait and restrictions on Saudi exports, high shipping costs could further push up crude oil landed prices and exacerbate regional supply shortages.
