[Greenland Parliament Approves New Security Agreement with Denmark to Increase US Military Facilities] (1) Greenlandic parliamentarians have approved a new security agreement with Washington, which will increase the number of US military facilities on the Arctic island. (2) The agreement was signed on September 22 by the United States, Denmark and Greenland; it is a supplement to the defense agreement that came into effect in 1951 and stipulates the construction of new US military facilities in Nassarsuvak in southern Greenland and Meistersweg in the east. (3) The Danish parliament will begin the review process on November 12 and is expected to complete it on November 19; the agreement will come into effect once both the Greenlandic and Danish parliaments have completed the approval process and formally notified the United States. (4) As previously reported, Russian Ambassador to Denmark Vladimir Barbin said on Saturday that the US deployment of an anti-missile system in Greenland poses a threat to global strategic stability. (5) Last month, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said that Copenhagen was satisfied with the agreement to expand the military presence with Washington.
