[Singapore Proposes Amendments to Tighten Laws on Transboundary Haze, Raising Maximum Daily Fine to S$1 Million] ⑴ Following the devastating wildfires in Indonesia in 2026, which left Singapore shrouded in thick smoke for weeks, the Singapore government has proposed amending legislation to tighten laws related to transboundary haze. ⑵ Minister for Sustainability and the Environment Grace Fu stated that Singapore plans to introduce several enhanced measures based on existing regulations: businesses that conduct business with entities or individuals suspected of causing fires will face business restrictions and fines. ⑶ The amended legislation will also authorize arrests within Singapore; the maximum daily fine for causing or contributing to haze-related fires will be increased from approximately S$78,000 to S$1 million, a tenfold increase.
