[World Bank: Least Developed Countries' External Debt Costs Hit Nearly 40-Year High] (1) The World Bank released its latest international debt report on the 5th, stating that the least developed countries are facing the highest external debt costs since 1989, and the growth rate of external debt in developing countries has increased significantly. (2) The report shows that for countries that meet the preferential financing conditions of the International Development Association, the average interest rate on new borrowings from the private sector will rise to 8.2% in 2025, an increase of 0.6 percentage points from the previous year, the highest level since 1989. (3) The average interest rate on new debt issued by these countries last year was 9.4%, an increase of 1 percentage point from the previous year; high interest rates pose a challenge to their economic development. (4) In contrast, for countries that meet the non-preferential loan conditions of the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the average interest rate on new borrowings from the private sector and new debt issued last year was 5.5%, a decrease of 0.3 percentage points from the previous year.
