On Friday (November 6), U.S. job growth accelerated sharply in October, while the unemployment rate declined slightly, indicating a continued strong labor market amid ongoing economic expansion. Data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics showed that non-farm payrolls increased by 165,000 in October, exceeding expectations of 65,000 and a revised increase of 60,000 in the previous month (originally reported as an increase of 29,000). The U.S. unemployment rate was 4.10% in October, compared to expectations of 4.20% and the previous month's figure of 4.20%. August's non-farm payrolls were revised upwards from an increase of 133,000 to 186,000, an increase of 53,000; September's were revised upwards from an increase of 29,000 to 60,000, an increase of 31,000. After these revisions, the combined increase in non-farm payrolls for August and September was 84,000 compared to previously reported figures. Resilient consumer spending and strong business investment have supported market demand and driven corporate profit growth this year, prompting companies to increase hiring. Data released on Friday also showed that job growth was broadly distributed across multiple sectors, with professional and business services and healthcare leading the increases. Traders have increased their bets on a December rate hike by the Federal Reserve. Institutional View Analyst Curran wrote that what changes in today's data would be needed to shift the focus of the Fed's discussion? If the data is stronger than expected, it will support a rate hike stance and solidify the view that inflation remains the primary concern, so this wouldn't be surprising. However, if the data is significantly weaker than expected, the situation will be different, especially if data from previous months has been revised downwards. This doesn't mean the rate hike discussion is over, but it will undoubtedly change the tone of the policy debate. (Updating...)
