Wang Peitao, deputy director of the Tsunami Forecast Office of the Tsunami Warning Center of the Ministry of Natural Resources, told Xinhua News Agency that the standard for issuing a yellow tsunami warning is "a tsunami wave amplitude of 0.3 meters (inclusive) to 1 meter due to the impact of an earthquake or other factors." The tsunami amplitude along the coast of mainland my country is expected to be 0.3 meters, which is not expected to cause disastrous impacts. Considering the potential for additional impacts from the landfall of Typhoon Rakshasa, a yellow warning was issued in accordance with the standard. These waves are expected to have some impact on the coasts of eastern Taipei, eastern Pingtung, eastern Pingtung, southeastern Taichung, northeastern Taichung, Hualien, and Yilan. The tsunami warning center maintains a yellow tsunami warning for the eastern coast of Taiwan, while lifting the yellow alert for the coasts of Zhejiang and Shanghai. According to reports, due to the natural barrier of island chains, the Pacific islands and reefs effectively absorb tsunami energy, significantly reducing the impact of Pacific submarine earthquakes and tsunamis on coastal areas of my country. Furthermore, the East China Sea and the Yellow Sea are located on a wide continental shelf, and their shallow waters accelerate the attenuation of tsunami waves, making it difficult for them to form destructive high waves. Earthquakes offshore my country are mostly strike-slip faults, rarely causing vertical displacement, and are less likely to cause sudden changes in submarine topography. Historical records show that earthquakes offshore my country are generally low in magnitude (rarely above magnitude 8) and have deep focal depths, further reducing the tsunami risk. Wang Peitao said this doesn't mean we can be complacent, especially during typhoon season. We must pay close attention to the impact of overlapping events.
