A chart: The Baltic Index rose on rising Capesize and Panamax freight rates

The Baltic Exchange's dry bulk shipping index, which monitors freight rates for ships transporting dry bulk commodities, rose on Thursday, driven by higher rates for Capesize and Panamax vessels.
The main index measuring freight rates for Capesize, Panamax and Supramax vessels rose 23 points, or 1.2%, to 1,963.
The capesize index rose 43 points, or 1.6%, to 2,816.
Average daily earnings for capesize vessels, which typically carry 150,000 tonnes of cargoes such as iron ore and coal, rose by $361 to $23,355.
Iron ore futures rose for a third straight session on Thursday, hitting a multi-week high, driven by expectations of a rebound in Chinese demand.
The Panamax index rose 39 points, or 2.3%, to 1,758.
Average daily earnings for Panamax vessels, which typically carry 60,000-70,000 tonnes of coal or grain, rose by $355 to $15,826.
Among smaller vessels, the supramax index fell 6 points, or 0.47%, to 1,461, its lowest level in a week.
