India's Oil and Fats Imports Hit Record, Palm Oil Demand Boosts Market (1) Industry analyst Dolab Mistry predicted on Friday that India's edible oil imports will rise 4.6% to a record 17.1 million metric tons in 2025/26, driven primarily by increased palm oil purchases. (2) As the world's largest buyer of vegetable oils, India's palm oil imports are expected to surge 13.4% to 9.3 million tons in the new marketing year (starting November 1), while soybean oil imports are likely to fall to 5 million tons. (3) Sunflower oil imports in the new season are also expected to fall to 2.7 million tons from 3 million tons this season. (4) India's increased palm oil purchases will help major producers Indonesia and Malaysia reduce inventories and provide support for Malaysian benchmark palm oil futures. (5) Global palm oil production growth is slowing, with an expected increase of only 1 million tons in 2025/26, while demand for food and biofuels is climbing. ⑹ Mistry predicts that once the peak production period ends in October, Malaysian palm oil futures are expected to rise and may exceed 5,000 ringgit/ton in November-December. ⑺ Due to the tightening supply of biodiesel consumption in major producer Indonesia, prices may rise further in January-March 2026, reaching a more than three-year high of 5,500 ringgit/ton.
