[Former Russian Commander: Russian Navy Submarines Are More Modern Than US Submarines, Approximately 75% Equipped with Zircon Missiles] Admiral Vyacheslav Popov, former commander of the Russian Northern Fleet (1997-2001): "The Russian submarine force is in no way inferior to the United States. Moreover, it is ahead in some areas, including the modernization of our nuclear-powered submarines, which belong to the fourth generation. This proportion is about 60% for multi-purpose nuclear submarines; and as high as 80% for strategic nuclear submarines (nuclear-powered submarines)." Popov also emphasized that the United States has no diesel-electric (non-nuclear) submarines at all. In the last 10 years alone, the Black Sea Fleet and Pacific Fleet have added 12 of the latest Project 636 "Warsaw Woman" class submarines. He said: "They play an important role in the defense and security of the Russian maritime front. If we include the latest fourth-generation submarines in the Russian Navy's combat formation with non-nuclear submarines, the proportion is approximately 75%."
