[Polish Grid Suggests Adjusting Wind Power Development Priority: Postponing Offshore Wind Power and Prioritizing Onshore Projects] 1. Grzegorz Onichimowski, CEO of Poland's national grid operator PSE, recently stated that to maintain economic competitiveness, Poland should prioritize the development of lower-cost onshore wind power and postpone offshore wind power projects. He emphasized that this European country, most reliant on coal, should fully realize the potential of onshore wind power before continuing its offshore wind power plans. 2. This statement echoes the recent overall cooling trend in the European offshore wind power industry. Over the past year, offshore wind power project auctions in Germany and Denmark have been hampered by rising costs. Although offshore wind power is considered a key pillar of Europe's energy transition, rising steel prices and financing costs have forced many governments to increase subsidies to advance projects. 3. According to Poland's current energy strategy, the country plans to achieve 18 gigawatts of offshore wind power capacity in the Baltic Sea and 35 gigawatts of onshore wind power capacity by 2040, gradually replacing the current coal-fired power, which accounts for more than half of its electricity generation. Currently, wind power accounts for approximately 15% of Poland's total electricity generation. The grid operator's suggestion may influence the pace and layout of Poland's future wind power development.
