Analysts interpret February non-farm payrolls: Employment unexpectedly declined by 92,000, mainly due to strikes.

2026-03-06 21:43:36

On Friday (March 6, 2026), the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) released its February employment report. Data showed that U.S. nonfarm payrolls unexpectedly fell by 92,000 in February, far below market expectations of around 59,000; the unemployment rate rose slightly to 4.4% (expected 4.3%). Private sector employment fell by 86,000, and government employment fell by 6,000. December's nonfarm payrolls were revised from 48,000 to a decrease of 17,000; January's nonfarm payrolls were revised from 130,000 to 126,000. After revisions, the combined number of new jobs added in December and January was 69,000 fewer than before the revisions.

The report specifically points out that the employment decline was mainly dragged down by strikes in the healthcare industry, while employment in the information technology sector and the federal government continued its downward trend.

This data fell far short of expectations, sparking concerns about a cooling labor market. However, most experts believe it is more of a "one-off mechanical drag" than a deterioration in economic fundamentals. The strike factor (involving approximately 31,000 healthcare workers at Kaiser Permanente in California and Hawaii) was widely cited, and experts generally expect the March data to rebound, with the overall trend remaining close to "flat growth" (approximately 50,000 jobs per month to maintain a stable unemployment rate).
