According to US media reports on April 3, a US Black Hawk helicopter was suspected of being shot down and damaged while conducting a search and rescue operation for a US pilot in Iran. The helicopter reportedly entered Iranian territory that day to search for the pilot of a downed F-15E fighter jet. Witnesses stated that the Black Hawk helicopter was emitting black smoke as it flew from Iran across the border into southern Iraq. Previously, Iran's Tasnim News Agency reported that Iranian air defense systems had hit a US Black Hawk helicopter.
