[Qatar LNG Tankers Make Emergency Turnaround After Approaching Strait of Hormuz, Global Second-Largest Exporter's Capacity Lost by 17%] ⑴ Ship tracking data shows that two vessels, Al Daayen and Rasheeda, carrying Qatar's Ras Raffaele liquefied natural gas, turned back after heading east towards the Strait of Hormuz. A successful passage would have marked the first time LNG cargoes had transited the waterway since the start of the war between Israel and the United States against Iran on February 28. ⑵ Kpler data shows that both tankers are controlled by Qatar Energy. The Al Daayen tanker was reportedly signaling towards China at the time. Qatar Energy did not immediately respond to requests for comment. ⑶ Previously, a Japanese LNG tanker named Sohar LNG successfully transited the strait, but its joint venture owner, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, stated on Friday that the tanker was empty and declined to disclose the time of passage or whether negotiations were involved. (4) The war between the US and Israel against Iran has lasted for more than five weeks. Tanker traffic in the Strait of Hormuz has been disrupted by fighting and retaliatory attacks. This waterway carries about one-fifth of the world's oil and LNG traffic. Qatar, the world's second-largest LNG exporter, has lost 17% of its export capacity due to the Iranian attacks. The restoration is expected to take three to five years and affect 12.8 million tons of fuel annually.
