[EIA: AI and Data Centers Drive Record Highs in US Electricity Demand in 2026-2027] (1) The US Energy Information Administration (EIA) stated in its Short-Term Energy Outlook report that US electricity consumption will reach a record high for the second consecutive year in 2025, and will continue to grow in 2026 and 2027. (2) The EIA predicts that electricity demand will increase from 4.195 trillion kWh in 2025 to 4.244 trillion kWh in 2026, and reach 4.381 trillion kWh in 2027. The surge in demand is mainly due to AI and data centers, as well as the substitution of fossil fuels for electricity used in home and business heating and transportation. (3) The EIA projects that the share of coal-fired power generation will decrease from 17% in 2025 to 16% in 2026 and 15% in 2027; the share of natural gas power generation will increase from 40% in 2025 to 39% in 2026 and 40% in 2027; the share of renewable energy power generation will increase from approximately 24% in 2025 to 27% in 2027; and the share of nuclear power will remain at 18%. In terms of natural gas sales in 2026, residential, commercial and industrial users will all decline, while gas consumption for power generation will increase to 36.1 billion cubic feet per day.
