[Global Polyethylene Market Faces Long-Term Oversupply Pressure] ⑴ According to institutional statistics, global polyethylene capacity growth is expected to be more than twice that of demand growth. Until 2030, polyethylene demand growth is projected at approximately 3.3 million tons per year, while capacity growth is projected at an average of 6.7 million tons per year. Growth in 2026 and 2027 is likely to be particularly strong. ⑵ Of the 34 million tons per year of reserve capacity projected by 2030, approximately 85% is under construction, primarily consisting of large-scale steam cracking units supported by major oil and chemical companies. This surge in supply will drive a restructuring of the global polyethylene market. Lower-cost, new large-scale facilities will replace less competitive older assets. ⑶ From 2026 onwards, the pace of capacity shutdowns in Europe, Japan, and South Korea will accelerate.
