[EU: Welcomes US-Iran Ceasefire, Calls for Lasting Solution] Brussels, April 8 (Xinhua) -- European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen welcomed the two-week ceasefire agreement reached between the United States and Iran on social media on April 8, calling it a "much-needed de-escalation" of the current tensions. Von der Leyen said the key now is to continue negotiations on a "lasting solution to the conflict." The EU will continue to coordinate on this matter. On the same day, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Maria Kalas said the ceasefire announced by the US and Iran was a "step back from the brink of danger" after weeks of escalation, creating space for a lasting peace agreement through diplomatic means. She also emphasized the need to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Kalas also said she had spoken with Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Dar, thanking Pakistan for facilitating the preliminary agreement. She said that given the unresolved underlying causes of the conflict, the door to mediation must remain open. (Xinhua)
