[Israeli Military Claims Litani River Has Severed Ties with Lebanon] An Israeli military spokesperson stated on the evening of April 8th that the area south of the Litani River has been "severed from Lebanon," and military operations are currently underway to "maintain the demilitarization of the region." Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu stated that evening that the temporary ceasefire in the US-Israel war against Iran does not apply to Lebanon. Since March 2nd, Israel has conducted continuous air and ground attacks throughout Lebanon, resulting in thousands of deaths. The Israeli military has also issued evacuation orders for approximately 15% of the Lebanese population, mainly concentrated in southern Lebanon and the southern suburbs of Beirut, displacing over 1.2 million people. The Litani River originates in the Bekaa Valley in eastern Lebanon, flowing north of the southern city of Tyre into the Mediterranean Sea. It is approximately 140 kilometers long and is the longest river in Lebanon, serving as a major source of irrigation and drinking water for southern Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley. The Litani River is very close to the border between Israel and Lebanon, less than 30 kilometers away. The Litani River is exceptionally rich in water resources, and the dispute between Israel and Lebanon over these resources, or rather, the anxieties surrounding water resources, has a long history. Even before the establishment of Israel, the Jewish community considered the Litani River to be Israel's northern border. According to a Russian journalist recently attacked by Israeli forces while reporting from the region, the Israeli military is attempting to isolate southern Lebanon from the rest of the country and is carrying out "ethnic cleansing" there.
