[German Foreign Minister Remains Cautious: No Traditional NATO Mission in the Strait of Hormuz] ⑴ German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul stated on Friday that he takes a cautious stance on a potential NATO mission in the Strait of Hormuz. He noted that Germany has announced its willingness to contribute to ensuring freedom of navigation in the strait and is coordinating with Britain and France to prepare for possible action. ⑵ However, he also stated that he does not currently believe there is a “traditional NATO immediate mission” in the Strait of Hormuz. He added that the federal government has provided assistance for clearing naval mines after the war with Iran, particularly those in waterways crucial to oil and gas flows, and necessary preparations are underway. ⑶ Despite reservations about direct NATO involvement, Wadephul emphasized Germany's commitment to the alliance, stating that Germany clearly supports NATO and that the United States knows it can rely on Germany at any time.
