[Institution: Canadian Retail Sales Data Indicates Weakening Momentum in Household Spending] Bradley Saunders, an analyst at Capital Economics, stated that although Canadian retail sales fell 0.7% month-over-month in March, a smaller decline than expected, combined with other data, the strong start to the year for household spending is now a thing of the past. In nominal terms, retail sales rose 0.9% month-over-month in March, stronger than the previously estimated 0.6%. Preliminary estimates indicate that sales will grow further by 0.6% in April. Saunders pointed out that the 5% increase in gasoline prices last month likely contributed almost all of the sales growth, therefore he expects actual sales to be roughly flat in April.
